The AIDS 2026 conference in Rio de Janeiro put a sharp focus on access to innovation, especially with regard to new long-acting HIV prevention tools and future vaccines. Our team of scientists, communicators, community engagement specialists, and partnership managers all had their own takeaways across a spectrum of topics.

In West Africa, devastating seasonal outbreaks of Lassa fever result in an estimated 300,000+ cases and 5,000 deaths – although the true disease burden is thought to be much larger. There are no licensed vaccines to prevent Lassa in endemic countries and to stop future global spread due to population growth and climate change. A safe and effective vaccine could bring a comprehensive end to the HIV pandemic by providing long-term protection, especially for those most at risk.

Tuberculosis (TB) caused 1.25 million deaths in 2023 despite existing treatment options. A safe and effective vaccine would be a powerful tool to drive down TB infections, morbidity, and deaths in high-burden countries and communities. Meet MTBVAC, one of the most promising TB vaccine candidates in development today. 

IAVI was at the heart of global HIV/AIDS response dialogue during the 25th International AIDS Conference in Munich. With more than 40 oral abstract sessions, 50 invited-speaker sessions, 20 workshops, 30 symposia sessions, 100 satellite sessions, and 2,200 posters, AIDS 2024 showcased exciting community-led innovations alongside scientific breakthroughs and game changers.
